Photography: Wildlife Photographer of the Year, M Shed

The 2013 Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition is currently being exhibited at M Shed in Bristol and on Saturday I went along to take a look at the successful snaps.

In its monumental 50th year of running, the prestigious competition encouraged no shortage of stunning images and breath-taking situations from a selection of the world's best photographers. I was particularly drawn to the works in the 'Urban Wildlife' category – Marcos Sobral's Primate Moments is endlessly interesting and amusing. And in 'Animals in their Environment' Paul Souder won with an unusual and arresting shot called The Water Bear 'There was just a flat, world of water and ice and this polar bear swimming lazily around me. I could hear her slow, regular breathing as she watched me below the surface or the exhalation as she surfaced, increasingly curious. It was very special.', says Souder of his experience shooting the bear after the cat-and-mouse game of trailing her.

Other favourites for me were Alessandro Bee's Little Bird, Big Water and Łukasz Bożycki's Eye of a Toad. I was pretty impressed by the under 10 and other young persons categories as well – compositions like that from the hands of photographers so young are remarkable.

Greg du Toit came out as the grand title winner with his Essence of Elephants, along with Udayan Rao Pawar for depicting a female crocodile surfacing with her hatchlings in Mother's Little Headful in the 11-14 category.

This is a brilliant selection of photographs and well worth the visit.
