The Playlist: Vance Joy

I'm delighted to have discovered a new country/pop singer-songwriter making some waves on the scene recently. Vance Joy was born in Melbourne and is signed to Atlantic records. His voice has the power to be coarse and smooth in equal measures and, like Ben Howard, Angus Stone and Sam Bradley (etc), he treats the great lyrics he writes with real care.

He released his first EP God Loves You When You're Dancing back in March 2013, and the music included in that is as soulful, ernest and uplifting as the record's title suggests.

I love Riptide for its energy and catchy chorus (and the lyrics "closest thing to Michelle Pfeiffer you have ever seen", of course). Other great tracks of his are Emmylou and From Afar. If you're a bit of an alt-folk/country fan give it a listen.
